Until someone gave me this book I was unaware that Steve Martin had written anything. Shopgirl was a good read, but not great. The book is about Mirabelle, the shopgirl, and her relationship with two men. The biggest emphasis on the relationships is the communication between men and women and how they comprehend meanings of words sometimes much differently than implied. This is funny and also tragic.
Being a novella it was very short, only about 130 pages. I wish it were longer. The book started out great. I really enjoyed it. It had some very witty humor and funny situations. I thought that this sounded like something Steve Martin might have written, especially after seeing movies that he had written screenplays for. However, the ending was weak. He spent so much time building up the characters that it seems he just let them down and dropped their stories unfinished. The story itself wasn’t horrible, but I probably wouldn’t recommend this book due to the disappointing ending.
